Background

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a common endocrine disorder that affects women, characterized by a combination of hormonal variations and metabolic problems. Polycystic ovary syndrome is a leading cause of infertility and can have a variety of side effects.

Some relevant definitions:

Back-ground

Hormonal imbalance: Polycystic ovary syndrome is characterized by elevated levels of androgens (male hormones) in women. This hormonal imbalance can cause irregular menstrual cycles and the appearance of cysts in the ovaries.

Ovulatory dysfunction: Another characteristic is anovulation, where the ovaries do not release eggs regularly. This causes irregular or absent menstrual periods.

Polycystic ovaries: It is a condition with cysts in the ovary. These cysts are follicles that have not matured to release an egg.

Insulin resistance: Many people with PCOS have insulin resistance. This is a condition where the body’s cells do not respond effectively to insulin. As a result, it can raise insulin levels, which could contribute to weight gain and metabolic problems.

Symptoms: Common symptoms of PCOS include irregular periods, acne, excessive hair growth, and weight gain. The condition can also affect fertility and increase the risk of developing conditions such as type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

Diagnosis: It is diagnosed based on symptoms, physical examination, and specific diagnostic criteria. These criteria may include the presence of irregular periods, clinical or biochemical signs of hyperandrogenism, and the appearance of polycystic ovaries on ultrasound.

Predominance: This medical condition affects approximately 5 to 20% of women.

Impact on fertility: It is one of the main causes of infertility due to irregular ovulation. However, with proper management and treatment, many people with PCOS can achieve successful pregnancies.

Management and Treatment: Treatment for PCOS aims to address specific symptoms and hormonal imbalances. Lifestyle modifications, including a healthy diet and regular exercise, are often recommended. Medications may also be prescribed to regulate menstrual cycles and control symptoms.
